Our Process

A Message From The Commissioners:

There was a time when emphasis was on making waste-water “go away”with very little concern for what happens when the water-and the pollutants it contains-gets to wherever ” away” is.

We wonder why anyone would have thought of this resource as “waste” water – piped away – wasted, at considerable cost. This begs the question: Is “waste” water reclamation and reuse in your future?

A $2.1 million dollar construction project that took four years to complete has given this community one of the most modern treatment plants available. The Greater Atlantic Beach Water Reclamation District provides a system of total redundancy that improves and backs up the plants ability to handle unscheduled equipment or system outages. This lends new flexibility to its processing methods. Built-in redundancies prevent shutdowns and the possibility of ever discharging untreated wastewater into the environment.

Never should wastewater treatment take a holiday. The Greater Atlantic Beach Water Reclamation District operates 24 hours a day each day to meet clean water standards with a perfect record, exceeding all standards on a continuous basis with well-conceived programs for maintenance and repair of equipment.

A water reclamation plant in which cleansed waste-water is released to Reynolds Channel where it flows toward the ocean to evaporate into the atmosphere, changes water molecules from vapor to liquid in a storm cloud, and returns again as rain – here or in some other part of the world. A system in which the final product is brought to a higher state of purification before expulsion benefits our local receiving waters and associated activities of swimming, boating, recreational and commercial fishing.

Water is a finite resource; we have all that we will ever get. It is used over and over again, and its cleanliness must be protected. Your public wastewater treatment plant, the Greater Atlantic Beach Water Reclamation District, stands at a critical point in this water cycle. It helps nature’s way of cleansing water and is a last defense against the polluting of our supplies.

As you may surmise from our enthusiasm, we are indeed delighted to report that the newly completed construction upgrade is being financed through N.Y.S. Environmental Facilities and a Environmental Bond Act grant. ” I am glad they (District Commissioners) pursued these State funds, because it holds the line on taxes.” Richard Guardino, Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead. “Thank You, District Commissioners,” he added, “for your extra efforts in preventing and protecting New York State waters from pollution.”

Consequently, with the proceeds from State funds, we have been able to * reduce your sewer tax on an average of 10% to 12% in 2002, undeterred by the important strides made in infrastructure and aesthetic landscaping improvements in an economy of rising costs. Indeed, we are sure you would agree that a tax cut of this size is quite remarkable given the scenario and what is happening in these times.

* Your sewer taxes are computed by a calculation of both taxable value and square footage of parcels.

MISSION STATEMENT FROM THE COMMISSIONERS

Through leadership, innovation, and teamwork, provide the Village of Atlantic Beach, Atlantic Beach Estates, and East Atlantic Beach with safe, efficient wastewater treatment to ensure a healthy environment for future generations at the best possible value for our residents, and at the same time protect our ocean water quality and meet state and federal standards at the lowest cost.

HOW DOES YOUR WATER RECLAMATION PLANT WORK?

PRE-TREATMENT : Bar Screens and Grit Removal
This allows sand, grit, and other heavy solids to settle, and later be removed.

INFLUENT LIFT PUMP
These units pump the plant influent to the next process.

PRIMARY CLARIFIER SEDIMENTATION TANK
Lets smaller particles settle. Scrapers collect the solid matter that remains, plus some of the grease floating on top of the tank.

SECONDARY CLARIFIER SEDIMENTATION TANK
Allows the microorganisms and solid wastes to form clumps and settle.

TRICKLING FILTER AERATION TANK
Supplies large amounts of air to a mixture of wastewater, bacteria, and other microorganisms. Oxygen in the air speeds the growth of helpful microorganisms, which consume harmful organic matter in the wastewater.

PRIMARY SLUDGE PUMPS
Pumping process is repeated and re-circulated from the Primary and Secondary Clarifiers.

FINAL LIFT
Treated wastewater is pumped to Chlorine Contact Tanks.

DISINFECTION
At this point in the process the water is clean, but must be disinfected with chlorine to remove disease-causing organisms in the water. The liquids are now referred to as “effluent.” In general, this treatment completes the process, and as a result the discharge into Reynolds Channel is 98% pure water.

THE SOLIDS
The solids on the other hand, are transferred from the clarifier to a digester where heat is applied and chemical reaction takes place. Later, the solids are conveyed to a second digester. The biosolids are now ready to be transported and later used as soil conditioners, and in certain processing can also be used to produce methane gas. The methane can be burned to supplement the energy supply for the plant.

This, in general, is the treatment procedure. In its more specific aspects, it is complex and technical. Laboratory testing must be made at many stages. Sensitive equipment must be maintained at a high level of efficiency, and the community must be protected against any possible contamination. The total system redundancy of the Greater Atlantic Beach Water Reclamation District ensures our community’s health and safety.
